D\u00fcrer\u2019s work was based not on a live animal but on second-hand descriptions and sketches of the first rhinoceros transported alive to Europe. The image is thus a creation between the \u2018real\u2019 and the \u2018imaginary\u2019, which remains for many more impressive than the \u2018real\u2019.\u00a0 The story is recounted in these fascinating documentaries:\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IPthhO4YU28\">part 1<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WsQCo04O97w\">part 2<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The logo has been prepared by Matteo Collodel based on these two (unpublished) quotations from the Feyerabend-Lakatos correspondence:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u201cPS: Most recent discovery: after a careful study of about 10 books about Rhinoceroses I come to the conclusion that Duerer\u2019s picture is still the best, and better than photographs.\u201d (Feyerabend to Lakatos, Spring 1969).<\/li>\n<li>\u201cYour Polyhedra Postcard gave me an idea: I shall have a postcard made with Rhinoceroses on it, my symbol.\u201d (Feyerabend to Lakatos, Spring 1970).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The rhinoceros that appears in the Feyerabend Centennial logo is modelled on a famous woodcut produced in 1515 by the German artist Albrecht D\u00fcrer.
